The James Brady Briefing Room has changed very little since its latest renovation in 2007. The setting is simple and familiar to anyone with a television: a podium in front of a blue wall with the emblem of the White House on it, and a gaggle of reporters, some sitting on the prestigious seats allotted to major outlets by the press corps itself, some standing up. This is the domain of the Stevens Administration's Press Secretary, Marie Wilson.

Wilson takes the podium and speaks up once the droning settles down. "Good afternoon. Today the President will meet with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Special Ambassador to China, Mister Yuen, after which a delegation from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will arrive to debate the recent proposal to extend further foreign aid to the UN-lead Chinese administration. In other news..."
The reporters begin to protest loudly. Wilson stops and smiles. "I know, we're getting to that. Finally, the White House wishes to address the incident that took place earlier today. Ladies and gentlemen, the President of the United States." She looks to her left, nods and leaves the podium.
The sitting reporters stand up as President Stevens enters the room from behind a curtain and takes her place.
"Good afternoon, members of the press, people of the United States", she greets them. "The airwave hijacking that occurred today by the terrorist known as 'Cordite' is being investigated by the FBI and the FCC. I am personally keeping an eye on this matter, since it's obviously of great concern to national security. Any vulnerabilities in our television broadcast systems will be rooted out diligently. Questions? Yes, Steve."
"What about Cordite's allegations that he was in fact responsible for the Mercury Bay Massacre?"
"The Mercury Bay Incident Commission's report did not mention a super in its findings, however considering that it was appointed by the previous administration, I can not vouch for it. If there is probable cause I will request law enforcement agencies to reopen the Mercury Bay investigation."
"But you do not see this as probable cause?"
"We will carry out our own investigations and come to our own conclusions. I'm sure SWORD will have more information on this, as they are the primary agency investigating and hunting Cordite. Of course, I am sure my predecessor would love to pin the entire incident on Cordite. Yes, Marion?"
"Cordite unleashed a very verbose attack on our country and declared 'war' on the United States. Do you have any response to that?"
"Cordite has been at war with law and order ever since he began his spree. There is nothing new here but the rhetoric, which would make even Kim Jong-un blush. I am as always committed to the safety of our country and its citizens. More questions?"

"Yes, Kenneth, right? Only been here six months, correct me if I'm wrong."
"Yes, it's Kenneth, Madam President. Does this incident mean that you are willing to take back the announced cuts to SWORD's budget after you took office in January? Perhaps even increase their budget?"
"SWORD's budget will be redefined if it is warranted. Apprehending Cordite will no doubt be a joint operation between several federal and state-level agencies, but I have the utmost faith in SWORD's capabilities, and those of the entire FBI."
"What about the new sponsored bill about a National Registry of Extraordinary Individuals? Word in the Capitol has it that more and more Democrats are turning out in favour of it."
"This would be a major overreach of power. The Department of Education will, as always, work with state school boards to reach these talented individuals at a young age, and offer them and their parents education and a career working for the common good. But we will not keep an eye on them for the rest of their lives if they refuse. If they turn to vigilantism or crime, that's different."

"Thank you for your time, Madam President", Press Secretary Wilson thanks her. She nods and takes her leave, waving her hand at the cameras and smiling reassuringly.
On the way back to the complex in the basement, an aide informs the President that her special briefing on Cordite and his latest stunt has been prepared and will be given in the Situation Room in 30 minutes.
