Backstory:
Hessel Raleigh was born to a couple of modest means in Mercury City, and lived a bland childhood. However, at age 12, something went wrong: Hessel started displaying a disorder named MPD, or Multiple Personality Disorder. He developed a completely different personality named Heimdal within himself, who would wake up when Hessel went to sleep or unconscious. Hessel's hair would turn blue at that point. Hessel's biggest problem with this is that he has no way to find out what happened while he is asleep. He doesn't especially like Heimdal either, especially since the latter tends to leave him to wake up in sticky situations and strange places.
At age 14 his parents sent Hessel off to a 'special' school, a school for mental cases. He hated the place, and tried to spend as much time either outside or leaving Heimdal in charge despite their differences. He managed to complete all his classes though, without too much effort. He's asked his parents multiple times to take him back, but they outright refused to do so, and the last few calls he made have even gone unanswered. After that, he decided to stop bothering.
Now, at age 17, Hessel is a slightly gangly youth, growing but still on the short side. He has short and scruffy hair with two longer braids on the sides of his face. He's a bit klutzy, but always keeps a sunny disposition. His power is to change the temperature of air and water around him, but not to the extant of boiling or freezing: he can make a chilly breeze or a cold bath comfortable, at most. However, he's still developing, so that might change in the future.
Heimdal
Heimdal is the alter ego that awoke at age twelve. Doctors haven't been able to find a cause for it, but it is assumed that Hessel's brain halves are separate and both fully functional. The personality created by the split is Heimdal, who, starting from age 12, has a different memory pool and a different character. He generally gets angry easier than Hessel, is grumpy, stubborn and dislikes almost everything. Every now and then he smokes, and tries to get away from responsibility. He will take responsibility if he has to, however. He doesn't like or dislike Hessel, but will try to shove things off on him if they are not in his favour. More often than not, he leaves Hessel in charge if he gets into a fight or gets lost, which results in Hessel getting even more lost.
When Heimdal becomes the one in charge, his magical power shows itself in that his hair becomes a bright blue, which is the only way to tell from a distance which of the two personalities is in charge. He doesn't have Hessel's klutziness, which makes him more likely to preform athletic feats, but has a penchant for getting into trouble.
Heimdal's power is a water-based series of magical spells, which require a relatively long casting time. He has to designate a focusing circle for his casting, which he must draw mentally by placing coordinates on a grid with himself as the center. He has to vocalise things like circle diameter, and corners of the pentacle that goes inside it, which words to place in the open spaces... all those things are needed to cast a spell. He can choose to maintain a circle for longer periods of time, which takes less energy and focus than drawing an entirely new one. He is also capable of storing up spells one at a time by drawing the focusing circles on pieces of paper, but only at the actual size of the circle for the spell, which limits how much power these stored spells can accumulate.
Other:
Both Hessel and Heimdal have a lousy sense of direction, but can follow directions if given. If one switches to the other when he's lost, the other will most likely not find the way back for several hours unless it's in familiar territory. However, familiar territory is different for both.
If you're explaining something, keep in mind you're talking to one out of two people, and the other half won't know what you've explained. If both halves need to know, you'll have to explain twice.
Switching happens both at will and unconsciously: both personalities can voluntarily give up their place to awaken the other, but if the other went to sleep normally, they'll be sleepy as if roused from a deep sleep unless they're prepared for it. When one of the two goes to sleep, the other wakes up, but when knocked unconscious by force or sedated by drugs, both personalities will sleep because those aren't mental conditions but physical.
A last thing is that Hessel is decidedly gay, which doesn't rest well with Heimdal, who refuses to accept it. He'll be friends with whomever Hessel likes, at most, bot hates it when other guys make passes at him.
