Citizen (Adult)
Name: Special Agent Ryoko Kowalski
Gender/Sex: Female
Age: 46
Height: 5'3
Physique: Slim, compact, agile
Hair: Black, long, worn in ponytail
Eyes: Brown
Clothing description: Wears a fairly standard black suit
Occupation: Special Agent in Charge, FBI Special Weapons, Operations, and Research Division; Retired Marine Gunnery Sergeant
Home City: Mercury City
Housing location: House in Mercury City suburbs
Backstory:
Ryoko Kowalski was born in 1979 to unknown parentage. She was adopted by the Kowalski family at age two, and she grew up in crime-ridden southern Mercury. She was a troubled child who got caught up in gang violence as she grew up, and her relationship with her strict foster parents was estranged at its best.
When she was sixteen, Ryoko was arrested for cocaine possession. Her father was furious, and, deciding that the only thing that could get her to shape up, requested that the judge order her to join the Marines. The judge complied.
Kowalski's years in the Marines helped her clean up and gain some modicum of self-respect, as well as instilling a healthy respect for the system. She first served in the War in Afghanistan. While serving there, her unit was assigned to hunt down Taliban military commander Mullah Mohammed Hafizullah, a known super with powers over magnetism and electricity that made him virtually immune to bullets. Kowalski was able to successfully sneak up on Hafizullah and subdue him at close range.
After this event, she was transferred to a new unit, the Marine Special Taskforce, dedicated to combating enemy supers. There she served with distinction in the continuing Middle East conflict, rising to the rank of gunnery sergeant. While she was offered further promotions, she refused, wishing to stay in the field.
After the war finally ended in 2016, Kowalski retired from the Marines. Still looking for a job that could keep up with her, but not interested in continuing the military life overseas, she joined the FBI.
In 2023, Kowalksi was selected as the head of the FBI's new Special Weapons, Operations, and Research Division due to her experience and leadership skills.
Other:
Kowalski is an experienced commander, and her time in the marines has shaped her into a colossal hardass. She has no patience for cowboy cop antics or reckless endangerment of the public, although she does try to protect the members of her division as best she can.
Kowalski does not share the resentment towards supers that many of SWORD's agents do, but she does consider them a potential danger to society that needs to be carefully controlled so that normal humans can stand equally alongside them. She is a member of the Society for Superpower Registration (SSPR) and a strong advocate of banning masks and other identity-concealing clothing.
Kowalski is also known to be dating, and there is a running joke around the Mercury City Field Office when she isn't looking that she has slept with everyone in the Bureau at least twice. She both smokes - preferring large cigars - and drinks, two habits which she has been attempting to break herself of for some time.
Kowalski is by far the best martial artist at SWORD. She is a second degree black belt in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program and has studied several other martial arts to supplement her own hand-to-hand capabilities. She also, of course, has substantial military training in the use of carbines and rifles.
