Occupation: FBI Special Agent/Junior Instructor, Extraordinary Abilities Unit
Powers/abilities: Fine-tuned control over metabolism and other bodily functions (see 3rd paragraph below)
Erik Pettersson's parents, Matias and Anna Pettersson, moved to the United States from Finland in 1980. Matias, a famous ice hockey player in Finland, was drafted by the Philadelphia Flyers and he enjoyed a ten year NHL career before taking up coaching in Canada. Erik was born a year after the move (1981) and thus received both American and Finnish citizenship, which he holds to this day. Thanks to his bilingual parentage - his father's language was Swedish, his mother's Finnish - he is still nearly fluent in Swedish and Finnish.
The Petterssons moved to Mercury City in 1985 when Matias was transferred to the Mercury City Quicksilvers. The family stayed there for seven years, and it was in 1992 that the 11-year old Erik Pettersson found out he wasn't quite ordinary. Erik was camping out with a friend and his family, and went missing in a lake while swimming. The search went on for forty-five minutes until he was dragged up, unconscious but remarkably alive and healthy.
Medical examination concluded that he had an uncanny ability to regulate his bodily functions and to push it beyond normal human limits. He had an innate subconscious control of it, which had kept him alive when submerged, but with decades of training he has been able to develop the talent into a very fine-tuned 'superpower'.
His body is still basically human, in that if it runs out of blood, nutrition or oxygen it will die inevitably. He can prioritize oxygen or blood supply to parts of his body. He can release adrenaline or endorphine into his system at will to help him in a dangerous situation, he can slow down the flow of blood to a limb with a wound, and he can slow down his pulse and lower his blood pressure to help him aim. He cannot change the composition of the chemicals inside his body - if he is poisoned, he can merely slow down the poison's progress through his system, but he cannot actually neutralize it. If he swallows something, the acid in his stomach will still dissolve it. If he gets an infection, he can shrug off the symptoms like fever, but he cannot destroy the bacteria, making losing the fever a dangerous proposition. To the envy of his friends and family, he can consume large amounts of unhealthy food without growing his waist, and he can get a lot more out of physical exercise.
When Erik's ability was discovered, his parents were contacted by the federal government's Extraordinary Abilities program. While Erik's father was wealthy thanks to his NHL career, he felt a certain obligation to the country that had offered him his opportunity, and talked his wife into letting their son enrol instead of having him go to a private school. With the EXA Erik learned to control his ability, and EXA decided that he would become a sniper in the United States military forces, possibly in the USSOCOM, in 1999.
The 18 year old Erik however did not find military life appealing in the least, and was able to get himself into the law enforcement path of the EXA program instead. After college and university, receiving a degree in international relations and history in 2003, he was admitted into the EXA division of the FBI in Quantico, Virginia at the age of 22. The administration of the EXA program took a dim view to 'wasting' his abilities on a job like this, as they were perceived to be of little value to an FBI agent, but the FBI itself was pleased to have another member in its ranks via the EXA system.
Besides, office politics dictated that superpowered personnel receive equal treatment and career opportunities, but Erik was perceived as a kind of "normal" super in that his talent was subtle and not really visible to the naked eye even when used. And he was still calm under pressure, an excellent shot with 20/10 vision to boot, extremely fit and intelligent, helped along by his athletic father and intellectual mother.
So, as opposed to people who can spontaneously combust or read minds, Erik was a good way to fill the quota without causing too much consternation. Erik was happy and comforming enough to oblige, even suppressing his abilities to fit in - shooting only humanly instead of superhumanly at the range, going to the bathroom at regular intervals, eating normally, and so on.
The incident with the EXA programme trying to shoehorn him into a career that didn't appeal to him left Erik with a sour taste in his mouth with regards to the military and the EXA program in general, but he feels a sense of duty to the United States and is content to serve and protect it. He however understands vigilantes and those supers who do not want to work for the government, but tries not to let it get in the way of his job.
Erik married a Virginian woman, Linda, in 2007 and they have two sons, Zachary (aged 17) and Jacob (15), and a mortgage. They live in Alexandria, VA. The marriage is a fairly happy one, although it suffers from Erik's impulse to devote himself to his work. His children have not inherited any of his talents. He hasn't worked in the field too much since turning 40 in 2021 thanks to red tape, and has worked in Quantico as an instructor and in a desk job at the FBI headquarters. However, he is every now and then requested to put in field duty as his abilities make him physically more resilient and capable than a normal person.
