Backstory:
Samir was an unusual baby in that he never cried. His parents never needed to rock him to sleep, or to calm him down, buy him mobiles or toys. This proved problematic for them, of course, because there was never any indication of when he needed to eat or be changed. He was only passively responsive to most stimuli, leading his parents to conclude some kind of handicap. In truth, Samir was merely perpetually mystified by lines of energy that constantly swirled around him.
Energy effuses and flows through everything - through the earth, the sky, through people themselves. Theories have been postulated by the occult for some time about the affect these have on people, from Buddhism espousing the virtues of Chakra flow, to the Japanese and their philosophies of Feng Shui. This was never a point of contention with Samir because he could perceive these energies explicitly. And for a large portion of his childhood, he was content with watching them. This had noticeable affects on how people perceived him. He was always distracted, lacked motivation, rarely socialized, and even then he was very introverted and difficult.
It was about the age of eight that Samir began to become a bit more curious about this perpetual flow, and began to open lines of inquiry about them. His parents, teachers and peers were taken by surprise by his sudden mental acuity, and also by his bizarre line of questioning. His questions were dismissed as childish imaginations, and Samir's curiosity went unquenched. Samir's constant quest for answers to his strange ability went on for much longer than what the adults considered appropriate, and, being raised in a very conservative catholic home, Samir began being suspected of involvement with lower powers. He was sent off to a Catholic boarding school were any inquiries about flowing energy was not only discouraged, but harshly punished.
When he finally returned home from boarding school at the age of 16, Samir no longer spoke of energy. He had conditioned himself to ignore it, both for his own benefit, and the benefit of others. He would not think of it again until the age of 22, when his girlfriend Gina gave him a tourist map of Seattle's Ley Lines, a trinket she had picked up while visiting the city. At first finding it a mild curiosity, he discarded it and went back to work on the current Architecture project he was doing for university. A nagging at the back of his mind, however, caused him to pay it more attention, and on a whim he looked further into Ley Lines, finding speculative maps about lines overlapping over major cities, major landmarks, and then an obscure layout of Walsh's ley lines, his own city.
It took several weeks before Samir could bring himself to actually visit any of the overlaps described on the map, but at some point, he found himself walking the scenic path through Walsh Forest, new sights and sounds seeming to press in on him as he walked deeper and deeper into the forest. He was headed for Bigger's Pine, which had gotten some notoriety in occult circles that talked of Walsh. It was described as a focal point of energy in the forest - a convenient explanation for all the bizarre sightings people reported in the woods. Samir had always put off such unfounded rumors, but, as he approached the giant tree, he saw what the map had described: an intersection of nearly a dozen ley lines. With a sudden realization, and an overpowering energy flow that he had not let himself see for years, Samir fainted.
He spent the remaining years of his university education learning occult studies of energy flow. He sought grants that let him travel oversees to learn from Feng Shui masters and Buddhist monks firsthand. He studied how architecture affected the flow of external energy, and how discipline and martial arts affected internal energy. This heightened understanding of the the earth had interesting effects on Samir's life. He could mold this energy many many times better than the oldest and wisest scholar because he was not theorizing, he was seeing. Balancing the forces of the nature became a new obsession - an obsession that left little room for other things in his life, especially relationships. Gina had left him years prior, and he never kept another girlfriend for more than a few weeks. In all other aspects of life, however, Samir seemed only to become luckier and luckier. His ability to alter his surroundings to benefit energy flow made every exploit he tried successful. Fortune followed him everywhere.
His career of landscaping was only another angle by which he sought to spread balance through the world. His amazing luck had tangible effects - money wasn't an issue for him with such a master of the stock market that he had. He spent this money freely, however. One of his biggest contributions was to the purchase, restoration, and reopening of the condemned Macafee building - a apartement building that was a little less than a hundred years old. He earned a reputation as a popular (if by no means the largest) philanthropist, although all of his causes seem to be dedicated to building or restoring buildings and monuments... to casual observation, these places were chosen seemingly at random. To someone with knowledge of Ley Lines, however, it becomes apparent that Samir's structures are built to alter and mold the Ley Lines of the city to converge on the Macafee building.
For as harmless as his facade seems, however, Samir's obsession with energy flow has started to become unhealthy, and he's starting to look into more drastic measures to mold the world in such a way to balance the leylines of the world.
Other:
In most cases, Samir's fortune is applied in non-immediate and less-tangible ways. In places with large amounts of energy flow, however, particularly in areas where ley lines converge, Samir's fortune begins to be almost perceivable. In extreme cases, a large amount of ley lines in Samir's vicinity might cause him be to nearly impossible to hit, and to deal any strike or blow with excellent accuracy.
Samir designed and oversaw the reconstruction of the Macafee building, which included an extra basement level that was sealed off and hid by Samir personally after construction. It's here that he keeps all of his plans for remodeling the face of the planet.
Samir is a self-employed landscaper. He's developed a good reputation with all of the real estate companies in the area and is contracted to do work fairly often. He also does freelance architecture, and is an active Stock Trader. To everyone that knows him, Samir is a very, very lucky man, who seems to always have a contract in the works, and never seems to get a bad stock. All together, Samir has a lot of money to throw around, although he is constantly spending it on new real estate projects and public works. He's a well-known philanthropist in Walsh, and even in a few other cities, as he has donated money or time to other projects outside of Walsh.
Samir has an active social life, if only for appearances. He learned as a young man that isolation draws attention, and therefore takes time away from his work to make friends with business associates other people in philanthropic circles. He lives in top 3rd story building of the Macafee building, but rarely stays there. More often, he's tucked deep into the basement of the building, pouring over wall to wall maps of Walsh city, with felt strings of various shapes and sizes pinned between structures.
