Palmer had called in his vacation hours for the past month, both to avoid explaining his burns to colleagues, and to take care of Jamie. She was an inquisitive four-year-old, and 'Unca Palmy' did not exactly appreciate having to keep an eye on her all the time. He acted the good sport though, and played with Jamie whenever she wanted.

The apartment had changed from its original layout; one corner had become Jamie's room, with a bed and playpen area.

Any attempts at getting details about 'Mama' had not ended well, resulting in Jamie breaking into tears or becoming temperamental or sullen.

Palmer was also making arrangements to become Jamie's guardian. Despite his better judgment, he never could force himself to give away the child to social services, and she had only grown more on him as time passed.
